About the Department

The full-fledged Department of Biochemistry in the institute was started in the year 1999 with a goal to achieve overall quality in teaching and patient care services. The Department of Biochemistry is a basic science Department, actively engaged in diagnostic support, teaching, training and research. At present on an average more than 80 patients samples (outpatient and inpatient) are processed in the biochemistry laboratory per day for various clinical investigations. Around 700 to 800 numbers of various biochemical investigations are performed per day. 24 x 7 laboratory services are now available.

The Department is currently equipped with an Automated Chemistry Analyser, Electrolyte Analyser, Semi-Automated Analyser etc. The various biochemistry investigation that are conducted in the department includes Blood Glucose tests, Kidney function test (Urea, Creatinine, BUN, Uric acid), Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Ionized Calcium), Liver function test (Bilirubin Total, Direct, Indirect, AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, Total Protein, Albumin Globulin), Lipid profile (Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL, Triglyceride), TFT (T3, T4, TSH, FT3, FT4 ), Drug estimation (Lithium, Valproic Acid, Carbamazepame), Hormone-Prolactin etc. New biochemical tests like quantitative estimation of RA factor, CRP etc. are now available in Biochemistry Department.

The Department has started a postgraduate course (M.Sc.) for Medical Laboratory Science students in Clinical Biochemistry from session 2022.

The clinical Biochemistry Laboratory is also actively involved in stringent Quality Control Programs. Third party Internal Quality Control is done on a regular basis to verify and validate the reports generated in the Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory. Moreover the Department is also participating in an External Quality Control program regularly in every month.

The Department has vision in starting the molecular lab for diagnosis of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and various genetic diseases in near future considering an urgent need in the North-East region of India.
