Introduction



Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) , set up as Tezpur Lunatic Asylum in 1876, has served the mental health needs for many decades. However, children and adolescents with developmental, behavioral, and mental health problems were seen along with adult patients until recently. 

Fulfilling the Vision of the Director LGBRIMH, for this noble cause, and with the able guidance of Head of the Department of Psychiatry, LGBRIMH, an exclusive "Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP)" unit has seen the dawn of the day on 2 September 2019. The services were inaugurated on 14 November 2019.

The vision of child and adolescent psychiatry Unit, LGBRIMH.

1. Enhance the outreach of child mental health services to the community;

2. Develop research in the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the North-Eastern part of our country;

3. Proactive liaising with all the stakeholders involved (NGOs, Pediatricians, Psychiatrists, Neurologist, families of children in need of mental health care);

4. To initiate higher academic courses such as fellowship courses in child and adolescent psychiatry; Training, IEC activities, and overall promotion of the child's mental health.

Services

1. Screening and diagnostic services for Neurodevelopmental, Behavioral, and Mental disorders in Children and Adolescents.

2. Pharmacological and Psychosocial interventions using multidisciplinary approaches.

3. In-patient services are equipped with 26 beds. Of which seven beds each for adolescent males and females, eight beds for children below 14years, and three beds for children with intensive care needs.

4. The out-patient department is currently seeing 30-50 patients per day, encompassing the entire spectrum of mental and behavioral disorders of children and adolescents.

5. This set up is equipped with adequate stimulating spaces for both outdoor and indoor play.

6. Consultation to the special population such as Children with conflict with the law (CICL), Children in need of care and protection (CICP), children with disabilities.

7. Disability certification (ex: Autism; ID; Psychiatric Disorders).

8. Emergency services of children are available 24x7 through our emergency psychiatry unit.

9. Preventive and Promotive services to children are being initiated in association with School mental health services, community outreach programs, and IEC activities. Screening and Detailed work up OPD (Gate no 3) on all working days except on Wednesday and Thursday. Registration time 9.00 am -2.00 pm.

Academic training

1. Training of MD Psychiatry Residents, Ph.D./MPhilPsychiatric social work, and Ph.D./MSc Psychiatric Nursing and MPhil Clinical Psychology in child mental health.

2. Liaison with Medical colleges and other institutes for training and research purpose

3. Training pediatrician in Child mental health (Proposed).

4. Initiating higher academic courses for scholars from various educational backgrounds.

Proposed research activities

To initiate Funded and non-funded research projects in the area of child mental health.
