About the Department

Laboratory services are an integral part of hospital settings and Pathology and Microbiology has been and continues to be a critically important area in health care settings. The stated mission of the Department is to provide comprehensive quality diagnostic services, teaching and to conduct important research. The Department of Pathology and Microbiology was started in the year 1998. Various Pathology and Microbiology investigations from outpatient and inpatient Department of the Institute are undertaken through this Department. The Department is equipped with modern diagnostic facilities for patient care services and research activities for the medical students and faculty. The Department strives to provide timely and accurate support where precise and efficient diagnosis can make a difference in patient care and management. Emphasis is placed on advancement in the area of scientific research so that we will march with the times.

Academic Activities:

The Department has been conducting classes and seminars on various topics related to Pathology and Microbiology. Apart from these activities all of the faculty and staff members of the Department attended the workshops, CMEs, conferences organised by different Departments of the Institute. The Departmentalso conducts classes for M. Phil in Clinical Psychology and M. Sc. Nursing (Psychiatric Nursing) students. The Department also conducts various training related to Biomedical waste management, Hospital infection control and preventionetc.

The Department has started postgraduate course (M.Sc.) for Medical Laboratory Science students in Clinical Haematology& Blood banking and Medical Microbiology from session 2022.

Patient Care Services:

24 x 7 diagnostic services are provided to the Indoor and Outdoor patients now. These include investigations like Routine Blood Examination, Coagulation profile, CSF analysis, Urine Examination, Stool examination, FNAC, Aerobic bacterial Culture and Sensitivity test. Sputum for AFB, KOH mount for fungal element, Malaria diagnosis, HIV-I & II under FICTC centre, serological test like HBsAg, Anti-HCV, Syphilis screening, Widal test, Typhidot,RA factor,CRP,ASO titre etc.

The faculty and the resident doctors of the Department are providing free clinical services to the needy. They are actively engaged in various consultancy activities organized by different governmental and non-governmental organizations. The faculties also provide medico-legal services and act in cooperation with the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC), Tezpur for certification of disability.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT

PATIENT CARE SERVICE:

A) Haematology & Clinical Pathology

Haematology is a branch of Medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the blood and bone marrow as well as of the immunologic, haemostatic (blood clotting) and vascular systems. Because of the nature of blood, the science of hematology profoundly affects the understanding of many diseases and changes that are seen in the blood of a patient, providing clues to the diagnosis and treatment of various clinical conditions. Investigations like R/E blood, complete blood count, reticulocyte count, PT, APTT, blood grouping etc. are available in this section.

B) Cytopathology

This section of the Pathology started functioning from the year 2014. The Department performs fine needle aspiration (FNAC) studies along with PAP smears and cytology for malignancy from various body samples are carried out. The section is also actively involved in various training and research related studies.

C)**Upcoming section in near future

a) Histopathology & IHC,

b) Neuropathology,

c) Blood bank etc.

EDUCATION AND ACADEMICS:

The Department has a very active in-service training program for various non-clinical Departments and also for lab technicians. The Department is also involved in various research and projects along with other Departments in the institute.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

The department is actively involved in KAYAKALP program a central government initiative scheme.
