Rehabilitation Services



These services provide a supportive, stable and structured program, utilizing a community approach to work that allows patients an opportunity to strengthen, identify and maximize their potential based on skills, abilities and rehabilitation needs.

The rehabilitation services of the Institute which were earlier carried out in the Indoor Department has now been shifted to the newly constructed Rehabilitation Centre in the campus. Currently, the activities of the Centre include Physiotherapy unit, Occupational therapy unit, Speech therapy unit, Wellness centre, Special education section. Rehabilitation needs assessment and counseling, skills training, skills development, job support initiatives, facilitating activities of daily living, psychoeducation, behavioural intervention, supportive and self-oriented interventions, family education, case management and environmental interventions are emphasized.

Physiotherapy unit includes evaluation, assessment and treatment of various Neurological, Musculoskeletal and Orthopaedic conditions, Cardiovascular Rehabilitation, Paediatric Rehabilitation by means of modern Electrotherapy and Exercise therapy equipments, Mobilization and Manual therapy.

Occupation therapy includes tailoring and embroidery, knitting and stitching, art & craft, wood & bamboo work, gardening, envelop making and a literary section.

Speech therapy and Audiology unit includes evaluation, assessment and treatment of various speech, language and audiological disorders.

Special education facilitating various activities for the persons with intellectual challenges, which includes ADL skill, communication /language skill, social behavior skill, functional academic skills and pre vocational /vocational training.

Wellness centre was established with the objective to promote positive health in an individual and to enhance quality of life and sense of well being.

Physiotherapy unit

Physiotherapy means a system including comprehensive examination, treatment, advice and instructions to any person preparatory to or for the purpose of or in connection with movement dysfunction, bodily malfunction, physical disorder, disability, healing and pain from trauma and disease, physical and mental conditions using physical agents, activities and devices including exercise, mobilization, manipulations, electrical and thermal agents and other electro therapeutics for prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, health promotion and fitness. It focuses on the science of movement and helps people to restore, maintain and maximize their physical strengths, function and motion. The underlying physical issues are explored and intervened to enhance overall well being. Services of this unit include Paediatric rehabilitation, Neurological rehabilitation, Musculo-skeletal and Orthopaedic rehabilitation and Pain management.

This unit provides services to both indoor and outdoor patients.

This unit is a state of art facility including modern electrotherapy equipments such as LASER therapy, Microwave Diathermy, Shockwave Therapy, Cryotherapy, EMG Biofeedback, Balance Board, IFT, TENS, CPM, UVR Paraffin Wax bath, etc and exercise therapy equipments including exercise stair case, Parallel bar, Shoulder wheel, Hand exercise table, Wall bar, Quadriceps Chair etc.

There is an average of 40 patients, availing Physiotherapy treatment in this unit on daily basis.

Occupation therapy unit

Occupational Therapy is a client-centered health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation (WFOT). “Occupation refers to things people need to, wants to, and are expected to do”. Occupational therapy is intended for people whose abilities of performing activities of self care, productivity and leisure are reduced or impaired by delayed development, physical injury or illness, old age, psychological, social or cultural or by combination of the mentioned.

Occupational Therapy interventions focuses on remediation of the performance component, adaptation of the environment where task is to be performed, modification of the task and education of the client /family to increase participation in the targeted occupation.

Currently the department of Occupational Therapy in Center for Rehabilitation Sciences, LGBRIMH has stitching and embroidery, knitting, craft, envelope making, weaving, bamboo, carpentry, and gardening activities. The pediatric section in the department also provides services to the children with Neurodevelopment, physical and congenital disorders.

Speech therapy and Audiology unit

This unit was established to cater to the needs of the patients with Speech and Language disorders. It focuses on the speech and language communication and helps people to restore, oral articulatory speech functions, and motion of articulators, voice disorders, delayed speech milestones and hearing impairment post amplification or surgery.

Special Education unit

This Unit is engaged in facilitating various activities for the persons with intellectual challenges, which includes ADL skill ,communication /language skill, social behavior skill , functional academic skills and pre vocational /vocational skill, meditaional excersise, gruop interaction, remedial education, counselling of patients and families, publication of awarness information in magazines about intellectual disabilities.
